What Is Retirement About? #1 Mistake!

Hello folks, perhaps you fall within one of the following categories…?

  • You are a youngster and short-term goal setter. You only care about what you need now. No goals for the nearer future.
  • You are a youngster and a long-term goal setter. You want to start consciously learning about retirement and actively looking for lucrative careers that will sustain you today until retirement.
  • You are in the middle of your career, and suddenly the thought of retirement stroke you. You want to start preparing for that era either by doing something complementary that will sustain you (& family) through retirement, or completely changing career paths.
  • You are already retired, and looking for ways to earn extra cash or full-time revenue without any physical effort involved.

Whatever category which pertains to you, be careful to avoid making this #1 mistake: retirement is not a topic reserved only for the elderly. Please let’s watch out!!!

What Is Retirement About? #1 Mistake!

Retirement is a topic of keen interest to me for several reasons, and mainly because of the painful life experiences I’ve lived through. I know what’s on your mind right now. You are probably thinking I’m some retired elderly individual, writing to inspire other retired elderly people.

To clear your doubts about the publisher, please visit this link, ‘Who Is Stunning Bell?’, for a personal encounter.

1. Feelings attached to retirement

When we think of retirement, there are certain emotions, feelings, impressions, and ideas (mostly negative) that always inevitably come with it. Why is it so??

I’m talking about depression, rejection, aggressiveness, tiredness, unworthiness, frustration, fear and sometimes humiliation?

2. Retirement Depression

I remember very vividly what happened to me once so many years back when I was much younger. I accompanied a relative to a party organized by their company. When we got there, we realized it was a feast thrown to honor colleagues going on retirement.

We enjoyed ourselves and had fun and when the party was over, my relative suggested we meet the newly retired colleagues in private and congratulate them for having acquired a prestigious and respectful status.

My relative was literally assaulted. The retired colleagues flared up, and said all sorts of angry disgusting things, blaming my relative for being responsible for their retirement. And that youngsters would never acquire the knowledge and experience they already had.

I was dumbfounded and speechless. This incident had me thinking about retirement ever since!!!!

3. Definition of retirement

What Is Retirement About? #1 Mistake!

These definitions are obtained from Oxford Dictionaries:

Retirement is…

”The action or fact of leaving one’s job and ceasing to work.”

”The period of one’s life after retiring from work.”

==> Definition explained

I love these definitions of retirement for their simplicity and truth. Yet ALMOST everyone in the world today cannot understand what those two short sentences really mean. A lot of miserable assumptions have been implied!!! making everyone to consider retirement like a horror movie coming live.

These definitions do not mention why you cease work. But yet society has made us attach horrible feelings to ceasing work:

==> What the society says about retirement:

  • You retire because you are old
  • You retire because you are no longer smart
  • You retire because you are no longer needed
  • You retire because they found a better option
  • You retire because…

==> Factual reasons for retirement

What if you retire because you want to discover the world, or spend time with family, or take a rest, or build the business you’ve always wanted, or … You name them.

You have all the right to make that decision. No matter what you do, the community will always look for ways to stigmatize your decision. And you live for you, not for the society.

==> Postive attitude towards retirement

When beautiful and talented people ‘retire’ with these negative stigma imposed by our surrounding community, they start looking at themselves as misfits, driven away to isolation and rejection under the canopy of RETIREMENT!!!!!!!!!

And that is when an irreversible journey of depression takes over if you don’t understand the real meaning of retirement and change your mindset immediately.

Contrary to what most people think, retirement is the period where you stop living at work and you start working at living. It is a phase of life to be celebrated!!!

There are several reasons leading to retirement. Retirement could be imposed by the society, or motivated by personal reasons.

Whatever the reasons may be, the individual must engage in some serious retirement planning activities, better sooner than later.

What Is Retirement About? #1 Mistake!

1. When to plan for retirement

Many people (especially the young ones) consider retirement planning as a topic meant only for the old.

Planning should be initiated decades before retirement action date/period. Yes indeed. Before you start looking for a job, it is advisable to start looking into the long-term and visualizing how you want to spend your retirement era and start preparing immediately.

You don’t need to be married to do this. You want to be on a safe side, irrespective of whether you have a family or not. And if you have a family in the nearest future, then the better. They are covered too.

These long-term perspectives in mind will really affect your current decision-making abilities in the process. You will be able to identify a career that will sustain you for decades to come.

2. Points to consider when planning for retirement

What Is Retirement About? #1 Mistake!

==> Retirement activities

You have the right to visualize the types of things you would love to do during retirement in every detail: traveling around the world, fishing, partying every weekend, building charities, providing for the needy, building that business, and what have you.

You have to be very passionate while doing this and take this exercise very seriously. List them down in your diary.

==> Research Activities Cost

Do a research on the internet just to have an estimate of how these things might cost you on a monthly basis. You need to put your mind to act and start familiarising yourself with huge sums of money. You can add some margins to cover inflation cost in the future.

==> Choose Career Path

Ok. Now you have an idea of what you need. Start asking yourself questions about the career you can choose to enable you to attain your objectives.

In most countries nowadays the retirement age has been fixed by rules and regulations governing the Social Security sectors. My definition of My Retirement age will not be geared towards that direction

My Retirement Age is that point in my life when I deem it necessary to withdraw from my working life and start enjoying residual income from the businesses or savings I made during my working life.

2. Characteristics

  • I decide when to retire. It could be at the age of 28! Why would I want the government to take care of me through social security? How much will I be paid? Will it be enough to live comfortably and to take care of my health? Will my trips abroad be sponsored?  I seriously prefer to take care of myself.
  • I have access to my accumulated wealth at all times. I won’t have to wait for month end.
  • I don’t have to receive a ceiling at the end of each month. I decide on the amount I wish to spend which is available at all times.

  1. I am lucky enough to be retired and actually have a retirement income (which I have not started taking yet :). I love being able to stay home and do what I want all day. Health wise, it is the best option for me anyway. I am always looking for ways to earn an extra living from home. That is hard to find for sure! I clicked on your link, and see that it is for Wealthy Affiliate. I actually joined them several years back, but unfortunately I did nothing with it because I associated them with all the other scams that I had been scammed with. Now years later, I see they are still growing strong with tons of great reviews. Time to get going again with them!

    1. Thanks for your comment.
      It’s a blessing to have substantial retirement incoming in. I’m happy for you. I also love staying indoors too. I love it so much that I started looking for work from home opportunities. I searched until I came across wealthy affiliate. What a blessing that was.

      I’m happy that you are back on board. As soon as signed up with wealthy affiliate, I knew I had found what I was looking for. That was a special Grace I didn’t deserve. I will forever be grateful.

      Wealthy Affiliate will never ever have a scam review because they are definitely legitimate, and they have stood the test of time.

  2. Hi StunningBell,

    I’ve been trying to convince my dad of the benefits of starting an online business as I have, it’s difficult to get him to understand that it’s really not about being an online salesperson, but about helping people to achieve their dreams – nothing happens overnight and it does take work but you are right, when the work is fun and something you enjoy it doesn’t really feel like work!

    1. Hahahaha OMG
      Your dad thinks the only thing you do online is selling articles. With your knowledge in online business, I hope that you can find a way to tell him to try things out and discover for himself.

      Truly nothing happens overnight. You have to set strong foundations for anything you want to last long. The foundation phase is usually the most difficult but once it’s set, your start building quicker and quicker and then the benefits start coming in.

      I wish you success in all your online endeavors

  3. Laurine,
    I think you need to start looking at retirement when you are young. I started when I was around 30. I left my first job after 27 years and took off about 5 months and relocated to another state. I worked another job for 15 years before leaving. Now I work from home and with all of my incomes from previous work, I make more per month than I did working.
    Planning is key, keeping at something is needed. I found Wealthy Affiliate several years ago and the work online keeps my brain going. Making some money on the side does not hurt either.

    1. Thanks John for your reply.
      That’s the main objective of retirement, to be able to take care of oneself without working. I’m happy that you are able to do just that with all that you are receiving per month.

      Planning is indeed key in everything we do. You said you found wealthy affiliate several years ago. Do you want to share some success stories with this platform? Many people will be delighted to hear them.

      Thank you once again for your comments

  4. A few days ago, our department supervisor surprised everyone by breaking the news that she’s retiring. We knew all along this day would come because she told us early this year that she will give it one last year. Sadly, she needs to retire earlier than what she planned for health reasons. She has been having chest pain and headache. Although her stress test and all lab works were normal, she feels it’s time to go. And by the way, she’s 59.

    Although I love my current job, I can’t imagine working for someone else until the age of 60 or 55. I am in my early 40’s and I am planning to retire before 50 that’s why I am working so hard now.

    Early this year, I started looking into affiliate marketing and that’s how I came across Wealthy Affiliate. I know that WA is not a scam. I am so encouraged by the testimonials of many members who are now earning and I hope to get to the point where I am making enough income to support my lifestyle.

    What advise can you give to someone like me who is just starting in terms of the amount of time and effort one needs to spend to be able to succeed? Should I focus on reviews and promoting Wealthy Affiliate?

    1. Hello Alysanna,
      Thanks a lot for your comments.

      Concerning your supervisor, I hope she feels better now. She finally decided to call it quit. It was her time. When you are working under someone, sooner or later, you will be compelled to make such a decision, or just wait for your official retirement and leave when the time comes.

      Concerning your status, I suppose you are trying to say that you cannot work for someone else AFTER THE AGE OF 60. Well either way round, I will certainly give you an advice and hope you will take it seriously. It’s similar to the content of my post.

      1. Take a pen and paper, and write down how you want your retirement to look like in great details.
      2. Evaluate your current potentials of getting prepared for your retirement. Now that you are currently working, calculate how much you would earn during retirement if you had to wait for retirement. YOu have the information to make this calculation. Keep aside your results.
      3.You came accross wealthy affiliate early this year. Wealthy Affiliate is not a scam as you rightly put it.Do the same exercise as the first one. You have information with regards to the commissions structure and the training required to earn. Estimate the number of hours you can put it, how often you can publish, how engaging you can be, and all that stuff.
      4. Compare your answers. Which option gives you a better chance of living a financially free retirement in less than 10 years? Which option will give you passive income if you are not working? How much have you saved from your career life? Will it enable you to be financially comfortable?

      You really have to take some time off and brainstorm. AND THEN MAKE A MOVE TO THE DIRECTION THAT WILL MAKE YOU ACCOMPLISH YOUR GOALS. I cannot give you a YES or NO answer because I don’t know what your current status is. I know where I stand and I’ve already made my decision.

      I hope I was of some help to you.

  5. Thanks for sharing this very interesting article Laurine. I am retired in the south of France since about 10 years and it is very interesting to compare the US retirement conditions with what it is in France. As I have just about never lived in France before taking up my retirement and almost never contributed to any retirement plans I have to rely on my online income which I must say allows me to live very comfortably.

    I look forward to your future contents.

    Best wishes,

    John ツ

    1. Thank you very much, Johny.
      Online business is the perfect backup plan that has enabled many to achieve financial success that they could not achieve working their entire lives.
      I look forward to building a solid foundation online too. I’ve started thinking of retiring early, it gives me enough time to set up a solid online business.
      Thanks for your comments.

      1. I am glad that you understand that you do not need to wait for retirement time to improve your retirement income, the earlier the better.

        Best wishes,

        John ツ

  6. Good information. I, too, am working on establishing a business at home so I can retire early. I love my current job, but I dream of the days when I can make my own schedule and not have to answer to a higher up. Thanks for posting this.
