#1. WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN TALKING ABOUT A SECURE WORDPRESS HOSTING COMPANY

...

There are many features one could use to determine the security of a WordPress host, but using my hosting experiences, I’ve identified 8 Key indicators of a very secure WordPress hosting environment:

  1. Website Security: This is definitely not the security of the host’s servers, but that of the web application. It’s the responsibility of the hosts to take care of their servers, and all hosting services online do a very good job at securing their servers. I personally don’t see any value added when using server security as a key indicator in identifying a secure WordPress hosting environment. All the hosting providers will score exceedingly in securing their servers no doubt. There would be no good business without any good servers. Even though some hosts will use more advanced technology than others, the overall security implemented by all of them would be good enough. But when it comes to the security of the WordPress hosting environment itself, the web application if you may, or hosting account as others might call it, it is the responsibility of the client or account holder to take extra measures to ensure it is secure. So what’s the point? Here is the thing. If the hosting provider, implements security at their server level, and then decides to take a step further, and assume full responsibility for the security of your web application, then they deserve some credits for this extra act of kindness. So this is what I’m actually looking at when it comes to website security.
  2. Daily Automatic Backups. This is another bonus I’m paying attention to. It’s also the responsibility of the client to take care of this side of things, but if hosting provider offers free daily automatic backups, then this will certainly be a plus irrespective of the conditions, so long as it is reliable.
  3. Restoring A Backup. Restoring a backup could be a technical process, and not everyone would have the courage to embark on one, including me. So if a hosting provider offers the possibility of helping you with your restores free of charge, then they gain extra credits from my evaluation criteria.
  4. SSL Certificates. SSL Certificate is free today, especially through the use of Let’s Encrypt. A hosting provider that includes it free with all their hosting plans gets an additional point.
  5. Domain Privacy. Clients must endeavor to secure the personal credentials they provided when signing up for a domain at WHOIS. But some hosts are kind enough to do that for your free of charge. These hosts will, of course, score an additional point for their goodwill.
  6. Staging Environment. This is a very important security measure every hosting platform must implement. You must be allowed to try out new applications and plugins, in a completely different environment, before actually installing them on your website, to avoid any unpleasant surprises. Any WordPress hosting platform that offers this free of charge gets credit for it.
  7. Spam Experts. Any form of spam feature, that helps to fight either spam inbound emails, spam outbound emails, or even spam comments right down to your websites, included in any WordPress hosting package, free of charge, gets a point.
  8. Full Redundancy. You want to be able to access your website 24/7/365. This is the work of Full Redundancy. It keeps duplicate copies of your websites on several locations, at any given point in time, so that in the event when one location is defective, the other picks up automatically, without affecting the accessibility of your websites. Every WordPress environment should endeavor to provide. No doubt this is quite an expensive technology to run, but some have managed to offer this to their WordPress hosting clients free of charge.

#3. EXPLANATION OF SCORING TABLE

...

I used a very simple logic. I verified that:

  • All the features in the table above are available;
  • And all included free of charge.

Once the 2 conditions above were met, the WordPress hosting company scored a point. Since  Full Redundancy is that one feature that is expensive to run, responsible for uptime guarantee, and rarely included in WordPress hosting packages, any of Inmotion Hosting or Bluehost that offers it free of charge scores 3 points!

Check  out the table below to see how I arrived at a score os 10 points:

SECURE WORDPRESS HOSTING COMPANY
DETAILS OF FEATURES CONSIDERED NO OF POINTS
1 Free SSL 1
2 Free Domain Privacy 1
3 Free Web Application Security Package 1
4 Free Spam Experts 1
5 Free Daily Automatic Backup 1
6 Free Restores 1
7 Free Staging Environment 1
8 Free Full Redundancy 3
TOTAL SCORE 10

#5. 2 MAJOR REMINDERS WHEN IT COMES TO SECURITY

...

If there are some things to retain from this post, make sure the following 2 are included:

  1. Be Sure To Also Perform The Daily Manual Backups Of Your Entire Websites. Do this every day with either a reliable plugin or paid tool, whichever that suits your needs perfectly well. Free daily automatic backups could be tempting, but once the backup solution does not keep multiple versions of your backups, you need to create that yourself. Don’t rely solely on this solution because if you are not keeping your backup archives, and you make a very bad move on your website, guess what happens, that website with the terrible mistake will be automatically backed up. And if you were not keeping other versions of your backup, you have yourself to blame.
  2. Full Redundancy: Always inquire about the availability of full redundancy in your WordPress hosting plans before you engage with any host, as it is the best indicator, that proves your website will be up and running most of the time, even when the servers of your hosts are down.
