NOTE 1. EXPLANATION OF SCORING

NOTE 1: EXPLANATION OF SCORING.

In an attempt to establish a common ground for comparison among several WordPress hosting platforms, I have identified several criteria for this purpose, and the integration of free web hosting SSL Certificates in every WordPress hosting plan is one of them. To facilitate understanding across all plans, scores have been attributed, depending on whether free web hosting SSL Certificate is available or not.

This is my opinion to make comparisons more meaningful, and should not be considered as a standard unit of measurement, as many people could express several different opinions on this topic. The purpose of attributing scores is to render decision making easier. Always make sure to carry out your due diligence before you ever decide to engage financially on any hosting service.

Check out the table below on how I distributed my scores.

FREE SSL CERTIFICATES SCORING TABLE
DETAILS NUMBER OF POINTS
Free SSL Certificate for the life of the account 5/5
Free SSL Certificate for the first year only 1/5
No Free SSL Certificate 0/5

NOTE 2. EXPLANATORY COMMENTS

NOTE 2. EXPLANATORY COMMENTS

CMT1 WA HOSTING

WA Hosting equally has a fixed term SSL Certificates of 3 months which are renewed automatically free of charge. Quite similar to Bluehost.

For the 50 Managed WordPress websites you can host with WA Hosting, each of your websites will be covered by SSL Certificates at no additional price

CMT2 BLUEHOST

Bluehost WordPress SSL Certificates have a fixed term of 3 months and are renewed automatically free of charge. Meaning you don’t get to pay an additional cent on SSL Certificates for the life of your account, even if you will be hosting for the next 10 years.

Irrespective of the plan you choose, each of their websites will be covered by SSL Certificates at no additional cost.

This is a really good investment, considering how important SSL Certificates are.

CMT3 INMOTION HOSTING

Inmotion Hosting offers free SSL Certificates for the life of the account through their WP packages Plan. That would also mean, a free SSL Certificate per website.

The Free SSL that they provide is attached to their cPanel and also covers every website under the cPanel. All you have to do is contact technical support once your account has been set up with them.

Their SSL Certificates are set to auto-renew with them.

CMT4 A2 HOSTING

A2 Hosting uses free let’s Encrypt SSL Certificates to protect all your websites and domains for the period of time you will host with them, without any extra payment required.

CMT5 WP ENGINE

WP Engine provides free SSL Certificates with all their plans and for the life of the account. Let’s Encrypt is the free SSL that is provided.

No additional cost for renewal. Everything is taken care of automatically and free of charge as well.

CMT6 WORDPRESS.COM

Same as the majority above. WordPress.com offers free SSL Certificates for each of their hosting plans. It’s worth mentioning here that all WordPress.com plans each offer only 1 website.

CMT7 GODADDY

Things are a little bit different with GoDaddy. SSL Certificates for GoDaddy have different conditions for each of the WordPress hosting packages.

GoDaddy Basic and GoDaddy Deluxe do not have free SSL Certificates included in their WordPress hosting packages. For each website under these plans, you have to pay $74.99 per year per website.

GoDaddy Ultimate and GoDaddy Developer, on the other hand, have each, 1 free SSL Certificate for the very first year only. At the renewal of these certificates, the client must pay at the regular price of $74.99 per year per website.

CMT8 IPAGE HOSTING

Ipage does not offer free SSL Certificates. You will have to pay $71.99/2 years for every website, or $35.99/ 1 year for every website.

A separate SSL needs to be purchased for each website. Only 1 SSL is applicable to each domain

Update 13th August 2018

Ipage also recently launched Free SSL for their existing customers, as well as unlimited WordPress websites. The implication is that new customers are going to benefit from these privileges too.

It is important to note that Ipage is in the process (as at the timing of this update, the 13th August 2018) of redesigning their homepage, which is currently lacking a lot of information ==> confirmed through live chat. You wouldn’t find anything related to unlimited websites and FREE SSL there for now, as they are still in the process of being included.

Most importantly, make sure to confirm the information on ‘’unlimited WordPress Websites’’ before you engage with any of their plans.

CMT9 HOSTGATOR

HostGator SSL Certificates are not included free of charge in their WordPress hosting packages. You must budget extra for this. Their SSL Certificates costs $71.98 every two years, for each WordPress website you host, or $35.99/ 1 year for every website.

Of course, the number of WordPress websites you can host will depend on the WordPress plan you choose.

Update 13th August 2018

HostGator recently included free SSL with their Managed WordPress hosting plans. It is free for all 3 websites, and for life.

CMT10. JUSTHOST

Justhost provides free SSL certificates to the unlimited number of websites they offer.

CMT11 SITEBUILDER

SiteBuilder offers free SSL for all domain names.

It is important to note here that this service offers templates for the building of Websites, so no WordPress hosting experience here. And when you create your website using the templates, the free SSL will be applied to it. Once you publish your site, you access the site using https.

You can build an unlimited number of template-based websites with your account. But one hosting plan will be assigned to only one website. So if you want to host many different websites, then be prepared to pay separately for any additional website you want to host.

However, FREE SSL will be applied to any number of websites you decide to host with SITEBUILDER. In essence, 1 website at SITEBUILDER equals to 1 hosting plan. The only other WordPress hosting platform that applies the same principle is WordPress.org.

CMT12 A SMALL ORANGE

The price of SSL Certificate was confirmed through live chat.

CMT13 DOMAIN.COM

Free SSL Certificates has just been launched at DOMAIN.COM at the date of this post’s update (13th Of August 2018). So no information regarding this is currently available is currently available on the DOMAIN.COM WordPress hosting page. Same as the unlimited number of websites. No pertaining to the existence of an unlimited number of WordPress hosting websites, but the live chat agent gave an assurance this was being implemented.

Be sure to confirm for yourself as well once you start to consider buying a plan from DOMAIN.COM.

CMT14 SITEY

Note that SITEY does not offer WordPress hosting services. It is template based, and provides a drag and drop website builder for your needs.

SITEY, like SITEBUILDER, provides templates to build your websites, and each plan is applicable to one website. This means that if you want to host up 5 websites, for instance, be prepared to buy 5 different hosting plans. You can sign up for one account, and pay for any number of plans inside.

However, for any number of hosting plans you choose to signup for, all your websites will be covered by free SSL for life.

CMT15 HOSTPAPA

Free SSL Certificates applicable across all HostPapa’s WordPress hosting plans: WP Starter, WP Business, and WP Business Pro.

CMT16 MOCHAHOST

This message was extremely clear on MOCHAHOST’S WordPress hosting homepage: Unlimited Free SSL for life across all plans.

I had no problem finding this information contrary to the other hosts.

CMT17 GREENGEEKS

GREENGEEKS offers just one WordPress hosting plan with unlimited resources, and free SSL Certificates happens to be one of them, applied to the unlimited number of websites.

CMT18 FATCOW

FATCOW has recently launched free SSL Certificates to all their plans (WP Starter and WP Essential), including WordPress hosting plans. Currently, their homepage has not yet been updated to include these new developments (hopefully they will anytime from now) as at the date of this review -12/08/2018.

In addition, there is a condition in order to benefit from the free SSL Certificates: your domains should be pointed to their servers. Otherwise, don’t count on their free SSL.

CMT19 NETWORK SOLUTIONS

It is mentioned on the official page that SSL is free for the ‘’GROWING BUSINESS’’ and ‘’PROFESSIONAL’’ plans. It isn’t free for the ‘’ENTREPRENEURS’’ plan.

However, I wasn’t able to confirm through live chat, it’s free for lifetime, or only for the first year. Make sure to obtain this information before you engage. Their live chat button was difficult to find.

CMT24 NAMECHEAP

in Linux Business plan there is a lifetime free SSL for one domain and that free SSL have to be renewed every year and renewal charge will be free since it a lifetime free SSL. The other plans do not offer free SSL Certificates. You would have to pay $25/Yr.

CMT27 HOSTWINDS

AutoSSL is included on all of HOSTWIND’S Shared and Business hosting plans. Those plans come with Softaculous, which allows you to install WordPress.

CMT28 FASTHOSTS

Live chat isn’t available for FASTHOST, meaning I wasn’t able to confirm any information here.

#3. IMPORTANCE OF SSL CERTIFICATES

EVERY WEBSITE MUST HAVE SSL CERTIFICATE INSTALLED FOR THE FOLLOWING REASONS???
  • SSL authenticates the websites being accessed and protects page authenticity on all types of websites.
  • SSL protects the privacy and integrity of the data in transit.
  • It protects information against any human attacks in between the source and the destination of data. SSL does this by encrypting data between two servers. Only the host computer can decrypt the data and only the client computer can verify the server certificate.
  • Sites that implement the SSL/TLS protocol display a padlock icon in the address bar. This is very reassuring for the users of those websites.
  • SSL is a trusted name online when it comes to security. When customers see the SSL icon, they’re reassured that their financial information is safe and secure. This helps build consumer loyalty and confidence in your brand.
  • An SSL Certificate provides a reasonable assurance that one is communicating with the website that one intended to communicate with, without interference by attackers and impostors.
  • An SSL secures accounts
  • It keeps user communications, identity and web browsing private.
  • Trusted indicators for a correctly installed and configured SSL certificate should be https:// in the address bar and padlock without any warning messages (mandatory). When users see these two signals, they are certain the site can be trusted when it comes to confidentiality.

#4. CONCLUSION & THE BEST CHOICE TO MAKE

TO CONCLUDE...

The presence of SSL on all websites is a must. In addition, a good number of hosting services now include FREE SSL Certificates in their managed WordPress hosting packages.

It would be a good deal to host with a web hosting service that provides this free of charge for the life of the account, as this would certainly save you thousands of dollars in the long run.

And if you want my personal take on the best service among the 31 displayed on that table, then…

This platform has been providing free SSL Certificates for years, as well as many other great features, which are currently being charged extra by other hosting platforms.
